River
Clean-Up Thank You
August
2004
The first
River Clean-Up Day took place on
Saturday August 14, 2004
. The event was organized by The Upper
Guadalupe River Authority and was a tremendous success thanks to all the
volunteers that turned out in full force.
Most of the
volunteers showed up at Guadalupe Park well before the
8 A.M.
start time. By
8:15
we headed out to
Ingram
Lake
,
UGRA
Lake
and many low water crossings located
throughout
Kerr
County
, including the North and South Fork.
With the "Canoe Crew" and "Land Crew" underway, soon
we were loading all sorts of riverbank debris into the trucks. Tires of
all sizes were our most popular find. Getting some of the heavier items
up the riverbank was a real challenge, but with a little ingenuity and
teamwork we took care of business. After loading and hauling about 8
cubic feet of trash back to UGRA dumpsters, about 20% was separated and
dropped off at the recycling center.
The Upper
Guadalupe River Authority is very grateful to all the volunteers for
their hard work and determination to make the
Guadalupe
River
a safer and cleaner place for all to
enjoy. The UGRA would like to give special thanks to AmeriCorps, The
Hill Country Fly Fisherman, The Hill Country Paddlers, Texas River
Protection Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Master
Naturalists, and The Boy Scouts of America. The Scouts were out in
force, having selected the Clean-UP to be part of their “Good Turn For
America” Initiative.
