UGRA facilitates water education experience for local 6th grade students.

Kerrville, TX, October 6, 2005 The BT. Wilson Outdoor Education Camp began last week in Leakey. It will continue through the month of October. Over 500 Kerrville 6th grade students, teachers, and volunteers will participate in outdoor activities presented by the Upper Guadalupe River Authority (UGRA), other local and state organizations, and many volunteer groups. This is the eleventh year that UGRA staff will conduct hands-on activities and practical field applications right in the river and on the water’s edge.

“This is a great opportunity for students to experience a river not only for recreation, but to learn more about a river as a natural resource and what the Guadalupe River provides for Kerr County citizens," states Ronnie Pace, UGRA President.

During the UGRA session, the students learn about the water cycle and water quality. They get their feet wet while seining the river in order to capture and identify animal organisms. With the help of identification sheets and water microscopes, students identify the animals that live in the river. “They never know what they are going to get,” said Gretchen Reutzel, UGRA Natural Resource Specialist.  “Students learn how to tell the animals apart and which organisms are indicators of good water quality,” said Reutzel.

The BT Wilson Outdoor Education Camp provides students with a better understanding of the world in which they live. “The river adventure enriches and expands on the lessons taught in the classroom while at the same time helping students become better stewards of the environment,” reports Ray Buck, UGRA General Manager.
