UGRA hosts reception for volunteer river monitors.

Kerrville , TX , October 31, 2005On Friday, October 28th, the Upper Guadalupe River Authority hosted a reception for its summer volunteer river monitors.

The reception included a presentation of the results for the Volunteer Summer 2005 “Swimability” Study. Those who participated in the volunteer river monitoring effort were treated to a presentation of study results showcasing their contributions. Volunteers also received a copy of the completed study and a Certificate of Appreciation presented by UGRA Board Director Dr. Jamie Quintanilla.

“It is very encouraging to see public participation in UGRA’s water monitoring efforts. This reception is our way of saying ‘thank you’ and letting our volunteers know just how much we appreciate their contribution,” said Dr. Quintanilla.

Also in attendance were community members who were interested in learning more about the UGRA’s water sampling programs and becoming UGRA river monitor volunteers.

The Volunteer River Monitoring Program was established in 2003 to give citizens the opportunity to contribute to the understanding and stewardship of the Guadalupe River . “The summer and fall sampling conducted by our volunteers complements current UGRA sampling and increases the overall value of our water sampling program,” said Ray Buck, UGRA General Manager.

The UGRA currently facilitates two major volunteer studies a year focusing on detecting bacteriological contamination in Kerr County ’s rivers and streams. The summer study consists of weekly water collections at popular recreation sites along the Guadalupe River . The fall volunteer study focuses on water sample collections from smaller water bodies including springs, seeps and creeks throughout Kerr County .
