UGRA Donates Equipment to Local Volunteer Fire Departments

Kerrville , TX , February 14, 2006 -  Upper Guadalupe River Authority staff visited the Ingram Volunteer Fire Department Friday, February 10 to provide them with replacement Hazmat Socks used in cleaning up spills of pollutants in the Guadalupe River .

The Ingram Volunteer Fire Department used the hazardous waste booms early last year when a concrete truck overturned on Highway 39 spilling contents into the water.  UGRA put funds together to help replace the used booms by providing them with Hazmat Socks.

“The Hazmat Socks are used to help stop spills,” said Captain Marvin Gazaway.  “The socks can be tied together at the ends making it longer and more effective in containing spills in the water.”  Capt. Gazaway was there to accept the Socks from UGRA General Manager, Ray Buck, Jr. along with volunteer fire fighters Rob Landon and Casey Tucker.

“UGRA is here to serve the community,” states Ronnie Pace, UGRA Board President.  “Partnering with the volunteer fire departments demonstrates how working together we can protect our river.”

Providing the local fire departments with spill containment equipment is apart of UGRA’s Spill Containment Initiative which is designed to protect the Guadalupe River from spills of pollutants.  The initiative began in 20004 where UGRA purchased containment equipment which is available for all seven county volunteer fire departments.  UGRA has continued the program by purchasing and replacing supplies when used in spill clean ups.  “The Spill Containment Initiative is just one way UGRA is working to protect our water quality,” says Buck.

UGRA aspires to be respected for its efficient, responsive and forthright stewardship of the Upper Guadalupe River and its tributaries.
