Schreiner
University
’s Environmental Science class visited the Upper Guadalupe River Authority
March 6 as an educational, behind the scenes look into the organization and
the services they provide to the community.
Professor
Lesa Presley along with her students attended a presentation given by UGRA
General Manager,
Ray Buck
, Jr. The presentation included a
look at the history of UGRA and details on some of UGRA’s educational and
water quality programs. Mr. Buck also updated the students on recent
activities undertaken by the UGRA to ensure the protection of water quality in
Kerr
County
.
“We
want to raise the awareness of the importance of the
Guadalupe
River
to our community. We are always grateful for the opportunity to share what we
are doing with the public. We are especially thankful to Professor Presley for
the opportunity to visit with her class. Education is the first step in
protecting our water resources,” says Buck.
The
students learned about water quality indicator organisms such as the Guadalupe
Bass. Buck related that UGRA
samples population numbers of indicator species; the population numbers
indicate the health or purity of the water.
After a brief description of the water quality monitoring program
initiated by the UGRA, the students were treated to a tour of the UGRA
laboratory. In the laboratory, UGRA staff demonstrated different tests that
are run to determine water quality. “We really appreciate UGRA letting our
class come in to see what goes on in the agency and for providing us with an
informative presentation and tour of the lab,” says Schreiner Professor
Presley.
“We
enjoy being able to provide our local students with an inside look of the
company and to show them what we do on a daily basis,” states UGRA Board
President Ronnie Pace. “It is our hope that these students will possibly
consider a vocation in science once they recognize the importance of
organizations such as the UGRA in dealing with environmental and ecological
issues.”
In
addition to other educational opportunities, UGRA offers internship
opportunities for college students.
UGRA aspires to be respected for its efficient, responsive
and forthright stewardship of the Upper Guadalupe River and its tributaries.
