UGRA Adds Ion Chromatograph to Enhance Water
Testing Capabilities
Kerrville
,

,
January 7, 2004
– UGRA
announced today that it has purchased an Ion Chromatograph to enhance its water
testing capabilities. Greg Etter,
UGRA General Manager, said: “The Ion Chromatograph will increase the accuracy
with which UGRA can measure key water quality parameters.
We anticipate that the IC unit will result in substantial savings in
personnel time and pay for itself.”
The Ion
Chromatograph will be used to determine ionic concentrations, such as nitrates,
nitrites, sulfates, chlorides, and fluorides.
The presence of elevated concentrations of these ions in water can be
cause for concern.
The Ion
Chromatograph will be used to support UGRA’s water monitoring programs.
The
purpose of these programs is to understand the
Upper
Guadalupe
River
and potential threats to the River.
UGRA samples springs, creeks and seeps that feed the Guadalupe.
It also monitors the Upper Guadalupe as part of the Texas Clean Rivers
Program. A volunteer river
monitoring initiative was begun in 2003 and is anticipated to be expanded this
year. According to Keith Marquart,
who heads up UGRA’s Laboratory, “The new Ion Chromatograph will be a real
asset to our water quality monitoring efforts.”
The Ion Chromatograph will also be used to test water samples for
laboratory customers. According to
Marquart: “The Ion Chromatograph will allow us to provide better service and
results to our customers.” The
Laboratory analyzes samples from domestic and municipal wells for ionic
concentrations, among other things.
The UGRA
Environmental Laboratory is a full service state-of-the-art laboratory serving
Kerr
County
and surrounding areas.
It is certified by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The Laboratory’s analytical services include bacteriological, chemical
and biological testing of water, wastewater, soils and sludge.
It is one of the largest microbiological labs in the state, by sample
volume. According to Marquart: “If
someone needs water tested, the odds are that we can do the job.”
